Job Title:
Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure-Track, Department of Computer Science, University of San Francisco

Job Summary:
The Department of Computer Science at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level starting in August 2026. We are seeking an exceptional scholar and educator who will strengthen and broaden our AI offerings, contribute to our department's research and teaching mission, and help us grow into a regional hub for applied, ethical, and interdisciplinary AI.

Full Job Description:

About the Department: The Computer Science Department at USF is a collaborative and inclusive community serving approximately 350 undergraduate majors and 90 graduate students across our B.S. and M.S. programs. The department values student-centered teaching, project-based learning, and close faculty-student interaction in classes typically capped at 30 students. Several faculty members are NSF-funded and publish in top research venues, with specializations in big data, distributed systems, human-centered AI, data visualization, network security, natural language processing, computational democracy, and computer science education. Many faculty collaborate with industry in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, the epicenter of AI innovation.

The department is also highly collaborative both within and outside the department. In addition to undergraduate and Masters programs in CS, the department also supports interdisciplinary programs in Data Science and Engineering. We contribute to the university's broader strategic initiatives through efforts like the Horizon Collective. We are launching outreach programs, such as a potential Cybersecurity Clinic that will provide cybersecurity services to organizations in the community.

USF provides competitive salaries to live in the SF Bay Area and has excellent support for new faculty, such as multiple teaching assistants for your classes, an internal research funding mechanism, and focused fully-funded writing retreats. USF was listed in the top 6% in "lifetime earnings" in the Georgetown University 2022 "Ranking 4,500 colleges by ROI", and listed as #1 in campus diversity among national universities in the 2025 US News and World Report. Computer Science is also listed as one of the strong programs at USF in the Fiske Guide to Colleges. The department has several active initiatives to broaden participation in computer science. This includes programs to send students to the Tapia and Grace Hopper conferences, to make scholarships and research opportunities available to women, non-binary, and low-income students, and a well developed CS-specific peer tutoring center.

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate(s) will:
  • Teach both introductory and advanced courses at the undergraduate and master's levels
  • Maintain an active research agenda that engages students and seeks external funding
  • Perform service duties to the CS department and university
  • There is also an opportunity to contribute to curriculum development for both our AI Major and the Horizon Collective

We offer a rich suite of AI courses, including Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning for Scientific Discovery, Data Mining, Program Synthesis, AI for Redistricting, and Advanced Topics in AI. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in complementary areas.

The standard teaching load for full-time tenure-track faculty is two 4-unit courses per semester, with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years), along with service to the department and university.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science or a closely related field, awarded by August 2026. This position requires a commitment to excellence in teaching within a culturally diverse environment. In addition, a strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of research potential and a publication record in AI, and an understanding of and commitment to supporting the mission of the University of San Francisco are required.

Applicants should submit a cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and interests (which should include reflection on teaching in a culturally diverse educational environment), evidence of teaching ability (e.g., sample syllabi, teaching evaluations), a statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation (to be requested upon submission of application). Questions may be addressed to: search2026@cs.usfca.edu. Review of completed applications will begin on November 21, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
