Academic IT Manager- Khoury College of Computer Sciences

About the Opportunity

This position is part of the Khoury College of Computer Sciences Information Technology Group, a team of six individuals that take great pride in creating and administering the state-of-the-art computing and networking infrastructure crucial to the College's success. Khoury's infrastructure supports a 10000+ user population including faculty, staff, and students. The computing environment is optimized for the teaching and research needs of the College and as a result many core services are run that must integrate well with the resources provided and supported by Information Technology Services. It is common for Khoury IT to be in the vanguard of new technology at Northeastern University.

The Academic IT Manager is a unique position within Khoury that builds and maintains customized platforms to support the computing needs of technical Computer Science courses. Building and maintaining automated platforms such as CICD and auto-grading, to enable students to create and submit course projects, is a critical function for supporting software engineering best-practices. This position will help faculty deliver teaching infrastructure for multiple undergraduate and graduate courses within the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. They will develop and maintain the infrastructure that students utilize to complete projects in these courses, assist students with technical issues they face while completing them, and offer support to Teaching Assistant (TA) staff as required.

Candidate must have proven problem-solving and technical skills, a "can do" attitude, the ability to work through challenging situations, and demonstrate continued professional growth and development. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and activities. Must take initiative to research new technologies when required for course infrastructure and be able to interact with faculty, staff, and students. To ensure that essential services are provided for classroom infrastructure, the employee may rarely be required to work outside their standard working hours.

Responsibilities:

Service Management
  • Create and maintain service catalog to streamline academic technology offerings specific to Computer Science.
  • Oversee existing course infrastructure, monitor and respond to issues including outages and bug reports, and upgrade environments, as necessary.
  • Manage the lifecycle for class-specific services, from design and deployment through decommissioning environments when classes have concluded.
  • Act as point of contact and access manager for Khoury's usage of Northeastern academic technology services.
  • Maintain relationships with Northeastern's Cloud team as well as manage Khoury's Academic IT cloud accounts.


Documentation and Collaboration
  • Work with Khoury Information Technology team to iterate and improve academic technology for classroom use, considering student and faculty experiences.
  • Collaborate with members of Northeastern's Academic Technology team to take advantage of campus offerings, offer feedback and suggestions, and stay ahead of Academic IT changes at the University scale.
  • Maintain detailed documentation and knowledge base articles for class infrastructure, cross-train others in Academic IT for business continuity purposes.
  • As necessary, this position may also oversee additional Academic IT coordinators in the form of Co-ops and/or eventual full-time staff members.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Faculty Collaboration and Instructional Design
  • Work with faculty members and instructors to implement and maintain customized technical projects that students complete in their classes. Maintain these projects as requirements change over time, including deploying and managing the infrastructure for these projects.
  • Consult with faculty and instructors to determine their needs and collaborate on the proper design of their instructional environments.


Student and Course Support
  • Work with students to solve technical issues with their projects. Hold "technical office hours" as needed to help diagnose such issues.
  • Monitor student concerns and interactions to improve documentation and processes to better the overall student experience.
  • Utilize and monitor ticket queue as needed to work on faculty and student issues with Khoury Information Technology team.
  • Work with course Teaching Assistants (TAs) as necessary to support student work within the classroom teaching environments.
  • Assist instructors and TAs with setting up and maintaining grading tools.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, required. Two or more years of experience working with students, specifically in a technology support or lab assistant role, a strong plus. Experience working in academic environments, also a plus.

Applicants should have experience in, but not limited to, the following domains:
  • Familiarity with at least three of these languages: Java, GoLang, Kotlin, Python, and Racket. Expert-level familiarity in at least one a strong plus.
  • Public Cloud computing platforms, such as AWS and Azure. Knowledge of private cloud environments a plus.
  • Data Science/Data Parsing
  • Experience with Docker, required, Kubernetes a strong plus.
  • Git experience required, GitHub Organization administration a plus.
  • Linux system administration and virtual machine deployment on a platform such as Xen
  • Administration of teaching systems such as Canvas and Gradescope, a strong plus.
  • Experience with automated configuration management tooling (e.g., Puppet/Salt/Ansible/Chef), a strong plus.
  • Basic web skills


Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal. Required to relate directly with customers including faculty and students.
